The Gentle Giants!
Whale Fluke Every year, January through March the Pacific Lagoons of the Baja Peninsula become home for the migrating Gray Whales. People from all over the world come to these remote marine locations to experience Marvel of Nature! As seen in many documentaries, the Gray Whales frequently approach boats and often guests are able to touch the whales.
It all began years ago when one female Gray Whale brought her calf close to a fishing panga (a small motorized boat) and for some unknown reason encouraged the little calf to interact with the puzzled and slightly scared humans on board.

Whale Watching in BajaNow, many years later this behavior has spread down through the generations of Gray Whales and you can see numerous mothers with their calves approaching the pangas with excited travelers, families and tourists on board, arms outstretched to greet the whales. Sometimes the mother will play with you, passing beneath the panga and as the people on board shift over to the other side to catch a glimpse of her she'll rise to the surface and give a playful spray from her blowhole to the cheers of the people on board the small boat.

Whale near the surfaceQuite often the mother will encourage her calf to interact with those on the boat and the whale calf, will gently raise its enormous head clear of the water next to the panga while all the humans on board clamor to rub, pet and caress this gentle giant.

Adult Gray Whales can reach 45 feet in length, and weigh about 30 tons. Newborns are betwen 14-17 ft and weigh in at up to 3000 lbs. That's like a 140 lb woman giving birth to only a 4 lb baby. Before the family heads north to feed in the waters of Alaska that baby will just about double its weight from milk that's 8 times richer in fat than human milk.

Book a Whale Watching Trip with Sea Trek. We'll make all the arrangements.

Whale Watching in BajaAn air conditioned bus will pick you up at your hotel in the morning. We'll drive south along the Sea of Cortez, then head west through the Sierra Giganta until we can see the sparkling blue Pacific of Baja's western shore. Snacks and drinks are served along the way and we'll stop periodically to explore on foot with our local, English-speaking guide.

When we arrive at Bahia Magdalena, friendly local fishermen are waiting to take us out in to the Bay in their pangas. We'll motor into position and await the inquisitive attention of the visiting whales.
After we leave the Bay we'll stop at a local restaurant for a Mexican feast--if you're still hungry after all the snacks and drinks on the bus and panga. We'll return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner.

Trip Cost is $225 and includes: roundtrip-airconditioned luxury motor coach transportation from Loreto, one additional hotel night in Loreto (double occupancy, $45 single supplement), panga transportation, all snacks, drinks and lunch. The whale watching trip is available for trips until mid-March only (then, the whales leave for Alaska). Please reserve as soon as possible. Please also note that while we believe we have chosen the best time of year and location to see whales, mother nature (and the whales) sometimes have other thoughts in mind and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
