Baja Kayak Trip Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the plane ticket?
From Los Angeles a plane ticket is approximately $400-$650 round trip. Add approximately $150 for the additional cost from San Francisco.

I've never kayaked before - can I do this trip?
This trip is fine for beginners. Kayak instruction is part of the package. However, participants should be in reasonable physical shape and more importantly enjoy camping. Sign ups can take our Intro Class in Sausalito for half-price.

How much do we paddle each day?
This varies depending on the trip. On the Classic Islands trip our longest stretch is approximately 6-7 miles when we move camp. On the Classic Plus trip, several days we cover 3-6 miles and three days 9-14 miles each day. Family Base Camp we paddle and use the skiff depending on the age of the kids.

The mileage listed is when we move as a group. Often afternoons are free for those who want more paddling time or you are welcome to take a boat out and greet the sunrise. It's the best seat in the house.

What's the weather like?
Baja is mostly sunny and the temperature is generally in the 80s during the day. At night it can cool down into the 50's. We choose to do our trips in March/ April because there's less wind, warmer air, and better water temperatures than earlier in the year.

Can I drink the water in Baja?
Loreto has a water treatment facility and the town's water is drinkable but to be extra safe we recommend drinking bottled water when in town. Our hotel provides bottled water. Water provided on the kayak portion of the trip comes directly from a water purification plant.

What's the food like?
Fish tacos in town at Lulu's, fresh brewed coffee percolating on some deserted beach, mexican eggs, tortillas, and fruit. How about guacamole and chips to nibble on, or a fresh fish fry. Hors d'oeuvres and fresh salads are served most nights, snacks are on hand during the day, and there ís always plenty available for vegetarians.

Do I need to bring my own camping gear?
You only need to bring your personal gear, a lightweight sleeping bag and pad. Sea Trek provides roomy Mountain Hardwear tents. Just let us know that you would like us to provide one for you.

What sort of clothes do I need?
This is Baja, so a few changes of beach wear, some extra layers for evenings and early mornings, some town clothes, and sun protection are all that youíll need in the clothing department. We'll send you a clothing list when you sign up. Are there any bugs? Thankfully no, except for the occasional midges around the sunset hour.
